Body Mass Index (BMI)
What is Body Mass Index or BMI? Body Mass Index or Quetelet Index is a statistical tool used to measure weight relative to height. It is widely used by doctors to know whether a person is overweight or under weight. Though BMI doesn’t calculate the body fat percentage, it is used widely to understand a healthy body weight based on a person’s height. BMI of a person is compared with average to figure out if the person is under or overweight. BMI calculation was invented between 1830 to 1850 by Belgium polymath Adolphe Quetlet. BMI is calculated by dividing a person’s weight by square of his/her height. Below are formula for BMI calculation in metric and SI system.
or, alternatively
To attain a more accurate BMI calculation, make sure that you have all inputs value as accurate as possible. For example, if you are calculating BMI using Metric Systems then use kilograms for weight and meters for height. Refer to Conversion Calculator of this website for conversion details.
Inputs :
Mass (lb) is your weight in lbs.
Height (in) is your height in inches. 12 Inches = 1 feet.
Importance
As mentioned earlier, BMI plays a important role in figuring out if a person has a healthy body. BMI provides an approximation of body fat percentage based on height and weight. However, we know that generally different people have different body composition, in this case BMI can provide wrong information. Below is the breakdown of the BMI.
Under Weight = < 18.5
Normal Weight = 18.5 - 24.9
Overweight = 25 - 29.9
Overweight = BMI of 30 or greater.
Note: This BMI calculation is for US. Other countries might have different range for breakdown.
